The highly-anticipated exhibition ‘Jordan: Dawn of Christianity,’ premiering in the Vatican on January 31st, promises a deep dive into this rich heritage. Organized by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiques, in collaboration with the Jordan Tourism Board, Vatican News was privileged to be among the journalists invited to a special press event at the St. Regis Hotel in Amman, offering a sneak peek into the upcoming exhibition.
Premiering soon in Vatican
This immersive exhibit, running until February 28th in the Vatican, coincides with the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Jordan and the Holy See, as well as the Vatican’s Jubilee Year 2025 celebrations under the theme ‘Pilgrims of Hope.’ Featuring over 80 artifacts spanning from the First Century AD through various eras, the exhibition will also incorporate audiovisual elements, offering a captivating journey through 2,000 years of Christianity in Jordan.
Transporting pilgrims to Jordan’s sacred sites
This exhibition promises to transport visitors to the sacred past of Jordan, often regarded as the cradle of Christianity. With Christians constituting about 4 percent of Jordan’s population of 11 million, the exhibition will highlight five key sites, including Maghtas, the Baptism site of Jesus Christ, and Mount Nebo, the final resting place of Moses.
During the event in Amman, speakers emphasized that the exhibit is not merely a collection of artifacts but a celebration of peace, unity, and the enduring legacy of Christianity in Jordan, inviting believers and all individuals to rediscover the nation’s roots of faith and heritage.
Minister of Tourism: ‘Safeguarding Christian heritage’
The event commenced with welcoming remarks from Jordan’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Her Excellency Lina Annab, who reiterated Jordan’s status as a “cradle of Christianity.” Emphasizing the significance of the exhibition in celebrating the roots of faith and preserving holy sites, Minister Annab highlighted the global importance of Jesus’ Baptism site as one of the most significant religious sites in the world.
Apostolic Nuncio: Christians in Middle East represent continuity of faith
Archbishop Giovanni Pietro Dal Toso, the Apostolic Nuncio to Jordan, highlighted the importance of Christians in the Middle East as a continuation of the faith from its inception. Stressing the need for mutual understanding and harmony in a globalized world, Archbishop Dal Toso underscored the Church’s commitment to supporting Christians in the region.
Managing Director: Protecting and preserving Christianity
Dr. Abed Al Razzaq Arabiyat, the Managing Director of the Jordan Tourism Board, highlighted the significance of the exhibition in presenting Jordan’s Christian roots to the world. He emphasized Jordan’s commitment to safeguarding Christianity and promoting peace and unity through this historic opportunity.
