Welcome to the historic event of the consecration of the Church of the Baptism of the Lord on the eastern bank of the Jordan River. Pope Francis has appointed the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, as the Pontifical Legate for this meaningful occasion.
In a letter to Cardinal Parolin, Pope Francis emphasized the importance of sanctifying and forming a community of believers who acknowledge and serve God in truth and holiness. This event commemorates the 25th anniversary of the Catholic Church’s pilgrimage to the Baptism site of Jesus.
Cardinal Parolin will preside over the Mass of Dedication and the inauguration of the new church at Al-Maghtas, the Baptism site on the Jordan River. The construction of this church, spanning 15 years, demonstrates the Church’s love and commitment to the Jordanian Christian community.
The Pope encourages Jordanian Christians to imitate Christ and bear witness to the living hope that faith brings. He also extends his greetings to all participants, including civil authorities, believers of other religions, and those who support religious freedom and human dignity.
The foundation stone of the church was laid by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009, with construction overseen by Nadim Muasher in memory of his late son Ayman. This event is a testament to the unity and faith of the Christian community in Jordan.
