Born on February 5, 1954, in San Francisco, California, Cardinal McElroy has a strong educational background, having earned degrees from Harvard University and Stanford University. He completed his ecclesiastical studies in Rome and was ordained a priest in 1980. In 2010, he was appointed as an Auxiliary Bishop of San Francisco before being named as the Bishop of San Diego.
