As the Holy Mass for the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord concluded in the Vatican Basilica, Pope Francis appeared at the window of the Vatican Apostolic Palace to recite the Angelus with nearly 30,000 faithful and pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square.
These were the Pope’s words as he introduced the Marian prayer:
Words of the Pope
Dear brothers and sisters, happy Feast of the Epiphany!
Today, the Church celebrates the manifestation of Jesus, focusing on the Magi who travel a long distance to Jerusalem to worship Jesus.
While the Magi undertake a challenging journey to see the King Messiah, those in Jerusalem, who are close by, fail to make the effort to visit the grotto in Bethlehem. This contrast prompts us to reflect on which category of people we belong to – those who actively seek Jesus like the shepherds and Magi, or those who remain indifferent despite their proximity to Him.
Let us ask the Virgin Mary to help us recognize Jesus in the marginalized, in the Eucharist, and in our fellow beings, just like the shepherds and Magi did.
After the Angelus
Dear sisters, brothers!
Today is World Mission Day for Children with the theme: “Go and invite everyone to the Banquet!”. I extend my warm wishes to missionary children and young people worldwide and encourage them in their prayers and solidarity.
Let us pray for peace in troubled regions like Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, and Myanmar. I greet various ecclesial communities and groups celebrating this day with joy and faith.
Wishing everyone a happy Feast of the Epiphany. Remember to keep me in your prayers. Enjoy your lunch and until we meet again!
