Zambian President Acknowledges Catholic Church’s Role in Debt Restructuring Efforts
Recently, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema met with the Apostolic Nuncio to Zambia, Archbishop Gianluca Perici, and expressed his gratitude for the Catholic Church’s support in the country’s debt restructuring efforts.
During the meeting at the State House on 31 December 2024, President Hichilema emphasized the significant contributions of the Church towards Zambia’s debt reduction and economic recovery goals. He also thanked Pope Francis for his leadership in advocating for debt cancellation for developing countries, especially in light of the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Education and Healthcare Contributions
President Hichilema highlighted his administration’s commitment to seeking debt cancellation within the G20 framework and utilizing the resulting funds for strategic investments and international trade partnerships to boost the country’s development. He also praised the Catholic Church for its contributions to education, healthcare, and social welfare in Zambia, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with religious institutions for the well-being of citizens.
Special Message from Pope Francis
Archbishop Perici shared a special message from Pope Francis, encouraging cooperation between the Church and the Zambian Government in promoting peace and harmony, as well as debt cancellation. President Hichilema expressed his gratitude for the message and reiterated the warm reception he received during his visit to the Vatican in 2022.
Zambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr. Mulambo Haimbe, highlighted the long-standing diplomatic relations between Zambia and the Holy See, marking the 60th anniversary of their establishment in 2025.
Overall, the meeting underscored the importance of collaboration between the Zambian Government and the Catholic Church in addressing key issues such as debt restructuring, peace, and development, reflecting a shared commitment to the well-being of the country’s citizens.
