Commenting on the latest developments in Syria, the Apostolic Nuncio expresses optimism about the future of the country following the recent change of regime. He believes that this change is a “breach of hope” for Syria, urging Syrian Christians and the international community to contribute to the country’s reconstruction.

The new year in Syria begins without Bashar al-Assad as President, and Cardinal Mario Zenari is cautiously hopeful about the country’s future after decades of dictatorship and civil war. Speaking to Vatican News, the Italian Apostolic Nuncio acknowledges some positive developments but emphasizes the need for concrete actions to follow the new leadership’s promises.
Mixture of hope and apprehension
A recent meeting between the new Syrian leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, and Christian leaders in Damascus has sparked optimism among Syrian minorities seeking guarantees from the new regime. The delegation, which included Franciscan friars, Syrian Catholic bishops, and other Christian representatives, received assurances from the Islamist Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham leader about an inclusive future for Syria.
Cardinal Zenari describes this meeting as a significant shift and a source of hope for Syria’s future. He emphasizes the importance of translating promises into actions at the leadership level.
Christians must stay in Syria
Despite lingering fears among Christians, Cardinal Zenari encourages them to stay in Syria and contribute to the country’s reconstruction. He believes that Christians have a role to play in promoting values such as human rights, freedom, and respect for all in the new Syria.
An unexpected “breach of hope”
The Vatican Nuncio sees the recent progress in Syria as a narrow “breach of hope” for a brighter future. He urges caution and emphasizes the need for sustained efforts towards rebuilding the country.
Justice for victims of Assad’s regime, not revenge
Cardinal Zenari reflects on the human rights violations under Assad’s regime and calls for impartial justice to prevent cycles of revenge. He expresses gratitude to those who risked their lives to help others during the difficult years in Syria.
Regarding the protection of women’s rights, the Nuncio believes it should be a priority for all Syrians in the new era.
International community must “work and observe” to help Syria rebuild
The Nuncio appeals to the international community to actively support Syria in its reconstruction efforts by lifting sanctions and focusing on rebuilding the economy and essential services. He emphasizes the importance of proactive engagement rather than passive observation.
