As the solemn Mass for the two-year anniversary of Pope Benedict’s passing concluded, Cardinal Kurt Koch shared his insights on the late Pope, describing him as “a very humble person who approached others and listened to what they had to say.”
Cardinal Koch, the head of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity, added, “He was a very kind person with a lot of inner light. For Pope Benedict, being a Christian meant being truly human, and he exemplified this beautifully.”
The Legacy of Pope Benedict
Reflecting on Pope Benedict’s mission, Cardinal Koch highlighted the centrality of the question of God in the late Pope’s work. “The God who speaks and reveals Himself through Jesus Christ was at the core of his teachings,” he explained.
Cardinal Koch also referenced Benedict’s encyclical on Christian hope, Spe salvi, emphasizing the importance of orienting one’s life towards God to find true hope and holiness.
A Personal Reflection
Professor Ralph Weimann, a member of the Ratzinger Schülerkreis, shared how Pope Benedict influenced him deeply as both a Christian and a priest. “He was not just a father figure to me, but a true Christian who embodied the teachings of Christ,” Weimann expressed gratefully.
Archbishop Georg Gänswein’s Thoughts
Archbishop Georg Gänswein, Pope Benedict’s longtime private secretary, was unable to attend this year’s memorial service in Rome due to his new responsibilities in Vilnius. However, he shared his sentiments, stating, “The further I am from Rome physically, the closer I feel in spirit. I am filled with both sadness and gratitude for the time I spent with Pope Benedict.”
Gänswein also reflected on Spe salvi, Benedict’s encyclical on Christian hope, which continues to guide him in his life and faith.
