Are you ready to make 2025 your healthiest year yet? The experts at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (Iss) have shared their top 10 tips for a year of wellness and well-being.
The focus of this decalogue is to highlight choices that can truly improve our physical and mental health in the year ahead, while also considering the environment we live in and the digital world where fake news can easily trap us.
One of the key rules in today’s digital age is to combat one of the most common addictions – smartphone addiction. Over 25% of teenagers suffer from this addiction, leading to negative effects on sleep, concentration, and relationships. The experts recommend creating a “smartphone-free zone” at home, such as the bedroom or dining table, to promote quality time and gradually disconnect.
When it comes to nutrition, the advice includes eliminating alcohol consumption, a toxic and carcinogenic substance that increases the risk of over 200 different diseases. Cutting out just one glass of alcohol per meal during and after the holidays can save you around 6-7000 calories, equivalent to one kilo of weight. By maintaining this habit throughout the year, you could end up shedding 7-9 kilos (as per nutritionists). Quitting alcohol and smoking can also be supported by reaching out to the Iss Green Phone against Smoking at 800 554088.
It’s also crucial to consume 5 servings of fruits and vegetables daily. To protect your heart, maintaining blood pressure at 120/70 mmHg with a balanced diet low in salt and regular physical activity is the fifth rule in Iss’s decalogue. “Reduce, reuse, and recycle” are the three R’s to minimize waste impact on the environment, emphasizing the importance of mindful food purchasing and storage.
Lastly, seek help in times of psychological distress, practice good hand hygiene to prevent infectious diseases, and rely on reliable sources for health information to combat fake news.
