Bishop Erik Varden of Trondheim, Norway, has announced an exciting new collaboration with EWTN and Exodus 90 to launch a unique podcast series titled “The Desert Fathers in a Year” on Jan. 1, 2025. This podcast aims to bring the wisdom of early Christian monasticism to modern audiences.
The series, which features the first episodes recorded at the Cistercian monastery of Nový Dvůr in the Czech Republic, will delve into the teachings of the desert fathers and mothers. These early Christian monks and nuns sought God through prayer and asceticism by retreating to the desert in the fourth century.
“In a world filled with distractions, the desert fathers show us the path to true joy and meaning through the love of Christ. Their mastery of distractions and temptations through prayer and silence serves as an inspiration for us to find direction in life,” Bishop Varden shared with CNA.
The launch of this podcast series aligns with the Catholic Church’s 2025 Jubilee Year of Hope, which Bishop Varden finds particularly significant. “St. Benedict’s words, ‘Never lose faith in God’s grace,’ serve as a guiding principle for us in navigating challenges. By prioritizing the love of Christ, we can discover strength and hope even in the midst of adversity,” the bishop added.
Drawing from Ancient Wisdom
The desert fathers and mothers were pioneers in Christian faith and practice, serving as a testing ground for spiritual growth. Through their practical advice and teachings, they developed strategies to overcome temptations and embrace freedom in Christ,” Varden explained.
He emphasized the relevance of these age-old teachings for modern Christians, stating, “My initial recommendation is to create space in your life. Contrary to popular belief, modern life can be less hectic than perceived. By adopting some of the practices of the desert fathers, we can find peace and clarity in our daily lives.”
