Amidst the warmth of the Christmas season, as we reflect on the profound mystery of God incarnate in swaddling clothes out of love for us, we are reminded of Saint Stephen, the first martyr for Christ. Although this year his feast day coincides with the celebration of the Holy Family, we can still honor and learn from his story. Described in the book of Acts, starting from chapter 6, Stephen was chosen, along with six others, to serve the widows of the community as the first deacons of the Church.
Despite his great faith and miraculous deeds, Stephen faced opposition from the Jews for his beliefs. Accused of blasphemy, he bravely defended his faith and proclaimed the history of salvation, ultimately witnessing a vision of Jesus before being stoned to death. His martyrdom and forgiveness towards his persecutors serve as a powerful example of faith and courage.
His feast day on December 26, alongside Saint John the Evangelist and the holy innocents, enriches our celebration of the birth of Christ. Despite the juxtaposition of his martyrdom with the joy of Christmas, it reminds us of the sacrificial nature of following Christ. Just as Jesus came to die for our love, Stephen exemplifies the call to share in Christ’s life and death.
Let us heed Saint Stephen’s example and embrace the journey of faith with courage and humility. May we, like him, proclaim our love for Christ and strive to be his faithful companions in this life and the next. Amen.
