Welcome to a Christmas celebration like no other. The Apostolic Nuncio to Ukraine, Archbishop Visvaldas Kulbokas, stood alongside Papal Almoner, Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, at the Latin Cathedral in Kharkiv amidst intense Russian bombings. Despite the chaos, they celebrated Christmas Eve Mass and continued the festivities with the Christmas Day Divine Liturgy at the city’s Greek Catholic Cathedral.
As the Christmas lights shone bright, Archbishop Visvaldas Kulbokas shared, “The light of Christmas rises above all difficulties, aggression, and bombing.” The birth of Christ was a beacon of hope in a city under siege, proving that even in the darkest of times, His light prevails.
This year marked the second time the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church of Ukraine united to celebrate Christmas on December 25th. The celebrations were attended by local bishops, representatives from various Christian denominations, city officials, and the community at large.
‘Jesus was present’
Archbishop Kulbokas emphasized, “Jesus was present, born for us. His light shines brighter in times of conflict and uncertainty.” Despite the bombings and attacks, the spirit of Christmas prevailed, offering joy and hope to those in need.
A diabolical war
The night was not without its challenges, with missiles and drones exploding nearby. However, the church remained intact for the Christmas Day Divine Liturgy, a testament to faith amidst adversity.
Despite the war’s impact on essential services, over 500,000 people without heating and water, the Christmas spirit endured. The Nuncio led prayers for peace, acknowledging the diabolical nature of war.
Significance of faith for children
The presence of children at the Christmas Day Divine Liturgy was a poignant reminder of the importance of faith, especially during wartime. Parents emphasized the significance of catechesis and church participation for their children’s salvation.
Mission to pray for peace
The Christmas celebration concluded with an agape shared with children and a visit to the Monastery of the Carmelite Sisters. The sisters, despite their fears, remained steadfast in their mission to pray for peace, believing that Jesus conquers all.
As we reflect on this unique Christmas celebration in Kharkiv, let us remember the resilience of faith in the face of adversity. May the light of Christmas continue to shine bright, offering hope and peace in troubled times.
