Welcome to Romadailynews, the radio news broadcast. Good afternoon from the editorial office, I’m Giuliano Ferrigno. Today’s top story: Christmas under the bombs in Ukraine. Kiev has reported a massive aerial attack with drones from Russia. The country was plunged into darkness during the emergency blackout as Russian strategic bombers took flight and cruise missiles were launched from the Black Sea. Moscow has been accused of targeting energy facilities in Ukraine and allegedly also striking Moldova and Romania.
In other news, Ukraine is celebrating Christmas on December 25th for the second consecutive year, aligning with the Western calendar rather than the traditional Orthodox date of January 7th. Meanwhile, in Italy, the Jubilee of Pope Francis commenced as he opened the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica, emphasizing the importance of speaking out against injustices.
Thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the Christmas celebration, but the mood was dampened by a tragic road accident that claimed one life and left another injured near San Severo and Torremaggiore in Foggia. Additionally, a fatal workplace accident in Milan took the life of a 52-year-old worker from the waste management company ANSA.
As the holiday season continues, millions of Italians are traveling or planning to do so, with a majority opting for domestic trips and a significant percentage heading abroad for New Year’s and Epiphany. This year’s holiday trends show a preference for non-traditional travel periods and shorter stays.
