The Community of Sant’Egidio Spreads Christmas Cheer to Thousands Around the World
Every year, the Community of Sant’Egidio, in collaboration with the Italian police, the Carabinieri, prepares Christmas meals for those in need. This year, they served 80,000 homeless, elderly, families struggling to make ends meet, and refugees in Rome, as well as an additional 250,000 people in various parts of the world.

A table without borders
On Christmas Day, the Community of Sant’Egidio organized meals for those facing challenges, spreading a message of hope to all. Volunteers came together to prepare and serve meals, aiming to bring joy and comfort to those in need during a time marked by crises and conflict.
During the Christmas lunch, labels like social status, income, or background disappeared as everyone came together to share a meal and receive a personalized gift.
A Roman Christmas meal
Since 1982, the Community has been hosting Christmas meals for the less fortunate, starting at the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere. This tradition has now spread to 70 countries around the globe, bringing warmth and joy to communities in need.
In Rome’s Trastevere neighborhood, the Basilica welcomed people from all walks of life, including refugees who arrived in Italy through humanitarian corridors. The menu featured delicious dishes like lasagna, meatloaf, lentils, and traditional Christmas desserts, creating a festive atmosphere for all in attendance.
