Today officially marks the start of Jubilee 2025 in Rome, with the opening of the Holy Door of St. Peter’s by Pope Francis starting at 7 pm. For the event that kicks off the Holy Year, high security measures have been put in place, including checks at access points to the square using metal detectors. There is a significant presence of law enforcement on the streets, including carabinieri, police, municipal police, financial guard, and army.
Measures already planned for special occasions like this one, but further intensified due to the antiterrorism alert, following the attack in Magdeburg, Germany on December 20th, resulting in deaths and serious injuries. The Vatican is considered a red zone in terms of security and is under close surveillance. Attention is also high in the rest of central Rome, especially in the shopping streets, where today is the rush to buy the last-minute gifts before sitting down for a family meal.
In addition to the opening of the Holy Door today, December 24th, Christmas Eve, the Christmas Eve Mass of the Lord is scheduled in St. Peter’s Basilica. Tomorrow, December 25th, Christmas Day, the Pontiff will give the traditional “Urbi et Orbi” blessing. This information can be found on the Roma Mobilità portal, detailing parking restrictions and road closures, which, along with the security measures already partially active since last Monday, will remain in effect not only today but until December 26th, 2024.
