The Beauty of Roman Polyphony: Christmas Concert at the Church of San Salvatore in Lauro
On a cold night in Rome, the church of San Salvatore in Lauro, near Piazza Navona, was filled with followers of Roman polyphony who gathered for a special Christmas concert on Saturday, December 21.
Cardinal Dominique Fracoise Josep Mambertì, Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, shared his thoughts on the event, expressing his satisfaction at seeing so many people appreciate the Roman polyphony performed by the Choir of the Lauretana Musical Chapel, under the Bartolucci Foundation. He emphasized the importance of sacred music, particularly the Gregorian chant as affirmed by the Second Vatican Council.
Maestro Adriano Caroletti led the choir, accompanied by Joseph SolĂ© Coll on the organ and Elisa Gerolimetto as the trumpet soloist. The evening showcased a repertoire of music by renowned composers such as Domenico Bartolucci, Lorenzo Perosi, and Handel’s Hallelujah.
The Bartolucci Foundation, established in 2004, aims to promote sacred music from the Renaissance to the present day. The creation of the Lauretano choir and the Lauretana Musical Chapel have continued this legacy, fostering a deep appreciation for the spiritual connection through music.
Reflecting on the legacy of Maestro Bartolucci, Pope Francis described him as an “illustrious composer and musician” who dedicated his life to sacred music. Benedict XVI also emphasized the universal language of beauty in music, which elevates the soul and connects people to the divine.
Aside from musical performances, the parish of San Salvatore in Lauro is actively involved in community outreach, including distributing Christmas baskets to those in need. Monsignor Pietro Bongiovanni, the parish priest, highlighted the importance of serving the most vulnerable in society, reflecting the spirit of Christmas.
