Embracing Hope: Cardinal Tarcisio Isao Kikuchi’s Christmas Message
As we approach Christmas 2024, the theme of “The peace of Christ in a war-torn world” takes on a profound significance. In a world plagued by fear and uncertainty, the birth of Jesus stands as a beacon of hope, illuminating the darkness that surrounds us. Vatican Radio has invited Catholic leaders to share their reflections on this theme, and today, we turn to Cardinal Tarcisio Isao Kikuchi, S.V.D., Archbishop of Tokyo and President of Caritas International, for his message of hope.
The Light of Hope
Cardinal Kikuchi reminds us that even the smallest light can dispel the darkness and offer hope to those who are lost and wandering. Our lives are a journey, a pilgrimage towards the eternal Kingdom of Heaven. And in the midst of this journey, we are not alone. The Lord Jesus walks beside us, guiding us through the darkness and leading us towards the light of hope.
Reflecting on the world around us, Cardinal Kikuchi acknowledges the prevalence of violence and the darkness that shrouds many parts of the globe. From Myanmar to Ukraine to the Holy Land, the shadow of violence looms large, threatening the sanctity of life itself. But in the face of this darkness, the Church is called to be a source of hope and light.
Protecting life, from its very beginning to its end, is a sacred duty that we must uphold. The Church, as the body of Christ, must open its doors wide to offer refuge and comfort to those who are lost in the darkness. We are called to be bearers of the light of Christ, shining brightly in a world that is desperate for hope.
As we enter the Jubilee year, let us remember that Jesus is always with us, walking by our side and urging us to keep the flame of hope burning bright. In a world torn apart by violence and despair, let us be beacons of hope, illuminating the path towards peace and redemption.
