The Papal Almoner Brings Hope to Ukraine
Recently, amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the Papal Almoner, Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, embarked on a mission to bring Christmas joy to villages heavily affected by war. Alongside the Apostolic Nuncio, he celebrated Mass and inaugurated a soup kitchen in the city of Fastiv, a community 80 kilometers southwest of Kyiv.
Continuing the Mission of Mercy
Cardinal Krajewski’s mission in Ukraine is far from over. Pope Francis gifted a new medical van and 6,000 ultrasound machines to aid damaged hospitals in Lviv. The Pope closely follows the initiative and remains informed about the situation in the country.
Upon his arrival in Kyiv, Cardinal Krajewski received a call from Pope Francis, showing concern for the dangerous mission. Despite the risks, the Cardinal pressed on with his efforts.
Spreading Christmas Cheer in Fastiv
In Fastiv, Cardinal Krajewski and Archbishop Visvaldas Kulbokas were greeted with a heartwarming Christmas performance by local children, many of whom were orphans due to the war. The children received teddy bears as Christmas gifts, bringing joy to their troubled lives.
Earlier that day, the Papal Almoner visited an elderly social house and interacted with the sick, participating in a Christmas tradition of breaking white bread. The St. Martin de Porres Center, run by Dominican friars, has been a refuge for refugees and vulnerable individuals for almost two decades.
Praying for Peace in Ukraine
As the day concluded, Cardinal Krajewski opened a soup kitchen at the center, emphasizing its importance for the poor and refugees. Volunteers, including many from Poland, joined hands to serve those in need.
Expressing the Pope’s desire for peace, the Cardinal hoped that this would be the last Christmas of war in Ukraine. Encouraging continued prayers, he emphasized the power of faith and prayer to bring about positive change.
Witnessing Modern-Day Miracles
Reflecting on the Gospel story of feeding the 5,000, Cardinal Krajewski highlighted the generosity of the people in Fastiv. Every day, donations of essential food items pour in, ensuring that no one goes hungry. These acts of kindness, he declared, are the miracles of today.
