The Importance of Family: A Christmas Message from the Catholic Bishops of Uganda
As the world celebrates Christmas, the Catholic Bishops of Uganda are urging a renewed focus on the family as the cornerstone of society.
In a heartfelt Christmas message delivered by Bishop Anthony Joseph Zziwa, the Ordinary of Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese and Chairperson of the Uganda Episcopal Conference (UEC), the Bishops emphasized the vital role of families in nurturing love, peace, and stability, following the example of the Holy Family of Nazareth.
Building and Repairing Family Bonds at Christmas
Bishop Zziwa highlighted the significance of Christmas as a time to reflect on the teachings of Christ and strengthen family bonds that reflect the divine presence of Emmanuel, meaning “God with us.”
“Christmas is a sacred opportunity for families to renew their commitment to creating loving and supportive homes,” he noted.
The Challenges and Solutions for Families Today
While acknowledging the challenges faced by families in today’s society, including high living costs and the negative impact of technology on family dynamics, the Bishops stressed the importance of collective action to restore dignity to families and protect children’s rights.
They also called for governmental support through legislation that upholds the integrity of marriage and family life, emphasizing the crucial role of laws in maintaining social stability.
Praying for Healing and Renewal
In addition to addressing family issues, the Bishops called for national reflection on Uganda’s socio-economic and political challenges, urging all Ugandans to pray for the country’s healing and transformation towards a more peaceful and prosperous society.
Embracing Spiritual Renewal in the Jubilee Year
The Bishops reminded the faithful of Pope Francis’ declaration of 2025 as a Jubilee Year, encouraging Catholics to embrace spiritual renewal and strengthen their relationships with God, each other, and the world.
In conclusion, the Bishops emphasized the importance of the family as the foundation of society and wished all Ugandans a blessed Christmas and a prosperous New Year, urging continued reflection on the centrality of family in the coming year.
