The Peace of Christ in a War-Torn World: A Christmas Message from Cardinal Timothy Radcliffe
The birth of Jesus is a beacon of hope in a world overshadowed by fear and uncertainty. As we approach Christmas 2024 and the beginning of the Jubilee of Hope, Vatican Radio has invited Catholic leaders to share their reflections on the theme, “The peace of Christ in a war-torn world.” Today, we have the honor of hearing from Dominican Cardinal Timothy Radcliffe.
Christmas Message of Cardinal Timothy Radcliffe, O.P.
Today, the world is engulfed in violence, more than at any time since the end of World War II. This anger manifests in wars between nations and within societies. Social media platforms fuel this anger, as it attracts readers and profits. Even the church is not immune to violent accusations.
Jesus himself grew up in a land torn apart by violence. He would have witnessed the brutal execution of 2000 Jewish rebels by the Roman occupiers. Yet, He embodied non-violence and taught us to turn the other cheek.
How can we learn from His example?
Violence stems from fear, blinding us to the humanity of others. Fear breeds enemies, but we need not fear, for love triumphed on Easter Day, vanquishing hatred.
Let us break free from the cycle of anger and violence. We have the power to declare, “The violence stops with me,” just as it ceased with our Lord on Good Friday.
Claiming our Christian freedom means starting anew. Jesus saw the inherent dignity and goodness in the marginalized, the outcasts, and even His enemies. Let us follow His lead and truly see others as brothers and sisters, crafted in the image and likeness of God.
