Just two days before the start of the 2025 Jubilee, St. Peter’s Basilica is gearing up for the final dress rehearsal ahead of the Holy Year and Christmas. Rome is on high alert for the opening of the Holy Door on the evening of December 24 and for Christmas, especially following the recent terrorist attack in Magdeburg, Germany on December 20, which resulted in casualties. The Vatican is considered a red zone in terms of security and is under close watch. Today, Pope Francis will not attend the Angelus from St. Peter’s Basilica due to health reasons, but will connect with the faithful from Santa Marta.
Starting this weekend, security measures are being implemented, especially in the Vatican area, the historic center of Rome, and throughout the city, with a large deployment of security personnel. Hundreds of men and women, including carabinieri, municipal police, finance guards, and police officers, are conducting checks on the streets. Security checkpoints around St. Peter’s Basilica have been active since last Friday, with a focus on the red zone around the Colonnade, Via della Conciliazione, and the access points.
