The U.S. bishops have officially named the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. as a special pilgrimage site for the upcoming 2025 Jubilee Year.
A jubilee is a sacred year of grace and pilgrimage that occurs every 25 years. However, the pope has the authority to declare extraordinary jubilee years, like the 2016 Year of Mercy, more frequently. During a jubilee, Catholics are encouraged to embark on a pilgrimage to Rome.
