Welcome to a unique and heartwarming tradition in the Vatican – the Blessing of the Baby Jesus figurines! This year, the event is even more special with an artistic contest themed “A Heart of Light”.
By Alessandro De Carolis
“Children, isn’t the Nativity Scene something beautiful? Isn’t it true, you men who represent the world of work? Yes, it is a beautiful thing; and for this reason, we will immediately bless your statues of Baby Jesus from our window, and then we will come down into the Square to bless the Nativity Scene that has been prepared here by the Vatican’s Printing Office workers.”
The First Blessing
Back in 1969, Pope St. Paul VI captured the essence of the Nativity Scene in his Angelus address on 21 December. He spoke of the simplicity and goodness depicted in the scene, offering a message of virtue and hope to all.
At a time when Italy was reeling from a terrorist attack, the Nativity Scene served as a beacon of light and comfort for the people.
The Tradition of the Roman Oratories
Today, the Blessing of the Bambinelli has become a cherished tradition for the Roman Oratory Center, bringing together children and families in a heartwarming celebration.
This year, the event is elevated with an artistic competition, adding a new dimension to the tradition.
A Contest of Creativity
On December 22, Roman oratories will gather under Bernini’s colonnade for a day filled with creativity and devotion. The day will culminate in a Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, followed by the Angelus in St. Peter’s Square.
Participants will showcase not only their Baby Jesus figurines but also paintings inspired by the Nativity and the theme “A Heart of Light”. The winners will be celebrated during the Feast of Recognition on 28 December in Rome.
