Pope Francis prayed for the victims of Cyclone Chido in Mayotte during his weekly general audience.
Before addressing the crowds in the Vatican’s Paul VI Hall, the Pope took a moment to pray before the relics of St. Therese of Lisieux brought by French pilgrims.
Expressing his concern for the inhabitants of Mayotte affected by the cyclone, Pope Francis assured them of his prayers.
He prayed for the souls of those who perished, assistance for those in need, and comfort for grieving families.
Mayotte, the poorest French overseas territory in the Indian Ocean, was struck by a devastating cyclone with wind speeds exceeding 124 mph.
Thousands are feared dead or injured, with more than 1,500 reported injuries according to French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou.
