Among the recent appointments of new cardinals, ten come from various religious orders such as Dominicans, Franciscans, and the Society of the Divine Word. This notable proportion from consecrated life adds diversity to the College of Cardinals.
Cardinals Assigned Titular Churches in Rome
Traditionally, each new cardinal is assigned a titular church in Rome, symbolizing their connection to the Diocese of Rome and the pastoral ministry of the pope.
Archbishop Rolandas Makrickas of Lithuania was assigned the deaconry of Sant’Eustachio, a historically significant minor basilica near the Pantheon in Rome’s historic center. On the other hand, Dominican Father Timothy Radcliffe received the deaconry of SS. Nomi di Gesù e Maria in via Lata, located on the Via del Corso, a part of one of Rome’s most fashionable districts.
These appointments have increased the number of voting members in the College of Cardinals to 140, who are eligible to participate in a future conclave.
