Welcome to the blog post highlighting the inspiring address of the Holy Father at the closing session of the Congress on “Popular religiosity in the Mediterranean.”
Address of the Holy Father
Your Eminence,
Dear Brothers in the Episcopate,
Dear Priests and Religious,
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
The Holy Father addressed the attendees in Ajaccio at the conclusion of the Congress, emphasizing the rich history and significance of the lands surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. These lands have been the birthplace of advanced civilizations, with the Greek, Roman, and Judaeo-Christian cultures standing out as examples of the cultural, religious, and historical wealth of the region.
Reflecting on the unique religious experience that emerged between the Mediterranean and the Near East, the Holy Father highlighted the continuous dialogue between God and humanity, culminating in the presence of Jesus Christ. Despite the passage of two millennia, the search for truth and meaning remains relevant in today’s society.
The Holy Father stressed the importance of popular piety, which embodies the faith in the traditions, customs, and symbols of a community. Popular piety allows individuals, even those on the fringes of faith, to connect with their roots and values, fostering encounters, cultural exchanges, and celebrations.
Furthermore, popular piety is seen as an essential aspect of evangelization, embodying the faith in culture and passing it on to future generations. The Holy Spirit works through the People of God, guiding them in their daily discernments and interactions with others.
The Gift of Faith
Remember the story of the pagan who received faith and immediately asked to be baptized by Philip in the nearest body of water? There was no hesitation, no list of requirements, just a simple act of faith and baptism. This is the essence of the gift of faith that Jesus offers us.
It’s important to ensure that popular piety, a deeply rooted aspect of Corsican culture, is not manipulated by those seeking personal gain or promoting division. Popular piety should unite hearts, build community, and contribute to the common good of society. Faith should never be privatized, but rather lived out through commitment, witness, and acts of charity.
Through popular piety, such as processions, devotions, and charitable activities, Christians can actively participate in society and promote constructive citizenship. It’s not just about personal beliefs, but about impacting the world around us in a positive way.
There may be some who don’t fully understand the significance of popular piety. However, it’s essential to recognize the value of traditions and practices that have stood the test of time in expressing faith and cultural identity.
As we navigate the intersection of religious and secular spheres, it’s crucial to develop a concept of secularity that promotes cooperation and mutual respect. Both realms have their own roles to play, and when they work together harmoniously, society as a whole benefits.
Let’s continue to foster dialogue, collaboration, and understanding between different spheres of society. By working together, without prejudice or opposition, we can create a more inclusive and compassionate community.
So, let’s embrace our unique traditions, like the deeply rooted popular piety of Corsica, and continue to be an example of faith, culture, and unity. And to the young people, I encourage you to get involved in shaping the future with passion and solid ideals. Let’s all strive to be close to one another, listening, sharing, and voicing hopes for a better tomorrow.
In the world of pastoral work, there are true pastors who have a deep closeness to history and culture. These pastors are the ones who truly embody the role of a shepherd. On the other hand, there are those who lack this connection and are simply known as “Monsieur l’Abbé.” They may hold the title of pastor, but they do not fully live up to the calling.
As we gather for this Congress on popular piety, my hope is that it will serve as a reminder to all of us to reconnect with the roots of our faith. Through this rediscovery, may we be inspired to commit ourselves anew to serving the Church and society, promoting the Gospel and the common good of all.
Let us seek the guidance and intercession of Mary, Mother of the Church, as we embark on this journey of faith and service. Thank you for your dedication and participation in this important event.
