Far from being a mere folkloristic relic, popular piety holds the potential to be a potent tool for evangelization in today’s world, fostering community and a sense of belonging. This was the key message delivered by Pope Francis during his Apostolic Journey to Corsica.
Speaking at the Palais des Congrès et d’Exposition of Ajaccio, at the close of the “Congress on Popular Piety in the Mediterranean”, the Pope underscored the “active evangelizing power” of these faith expressions, stressing the need for constructive dialogue between Christian and secular cultures.
Dialogue between Christian and Secular Cultures
In his speech, Pope Francis reflected on the historical significance of the Mediterranean as a melting pot of civilizations, where the dialogue between God and humanity culminated in the Incarnation of Jesus Christ. He acknowledged the waning influence of Christian faith in contemporary societies, particularly in Europe, but cautioned against pitting Christian and secular cultures against each other.
The Pope called for mutual openness between these two realms, recognizing that even non-believers are driven by a search for truth and meaning. He emphasized the common thirst for core values that unite individuals, regardless of their religious affiliations.
The Evangelizing and Community-Building Power of Popular Piety
Highlighting the beauty and importance of popular piety, Pope Francis noted how it allows individuals, whether devout or on the fringes of faith, to connect with their spiritual heritage. By engaging in simple gestures and symbolic rituals rooted in cultural traditions, popular piety reveals God’s presence in history and strengthens the bond with the Church.
“Popular piety enables us to see how the faith, once received, becomes embodied in a culture and is constantly passed on, and as a result, it is an active evangelizing power which we must not underestimate: to do so would be to fail to recognize the work of the Holy Spirit.”
Need for Pastoral Discernment
While celebrating the impact of popular piety, Pope Francis warned against reducing it to superficial or superstitious practices. He urged for theological and pastoral discernment to ensure that popular piety remains deeply rooted in spiritual engagement.
The Positive Impact of Popular Piety on Society
Popular piety, the Pope argued, plays a vital role in nurturing an authentic faith that transcends individual belief to promote social progress and environmental stewardship. By strengthening the social fabric and fostering constructive citizenship, popular piety encourages collaboration between religious and secular institutions for the greater good of society.
Promoting a “Healthy Secularity”
Pope Francis advocated for a balanced cooperation between civil and ecclesial authorities, emphasizing the importance of a “healthy secularity” that upholds ethical and spiritual values in public life without politicizing religion.
Renewed Commitment to the Gospel and the Common Good
In conclusion, Pope Francis called on the Catholic community in Corsica to uphold their religious traditions and engage actively in social and political life for the common good. He urged young Corsicans to embody solid ideals and work towards a society rooted in faith and service.
“It is my hope that this Congress on popular piety will help you to rediscover the roots of your faith and bear fruit in renewed commitment, in the Church and in civil society, at the service of the Gospel and the common good of all citizens.”
