By Francesca Merlo
On his 47th Apostolic Journey abroad, Pope Francis is en route to Corsica. The plane, carrying the Pope and journalists, took off from Rome at 8am local time and is set to touch down at Ajaccio Airport at around 9am. Known as the “Island of Beauty”, Corsica will be hosting the Pope for a Conference on Popular Religiosity in the Mediterranean.
A message to the Italian President
Prior to his departure, Pope Francis sent a telegram to Italian President Sergio Mattarella, reflecting on the upcoming journey as an opportunity to explore the rich religious and cultural heritage of civilizations along the Mediterranean Sea. The Pope emphasized the importance of preserving spiritual legacies and fostering dialogue among different faiths and institutions.
Meetings and Mass
During his brief visit, Pope Francis will engage with clergy, speak at the conference, and celebrate Holy Mass in Corsica. He will also have a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron before returning to Rome later in the evening.
Heartfelt farewell
Before departing, Pope Francis received a special greeting from a group of homeless individuals who sought shelter in St. Peter’s Square. Cardinal Konrad Krajewski accompanied the Pope as they bid farewell to the heartfelt gesture.
