Embracing Solidarity and Closeness
Expressing gratitude for the Association’s outreach activities and commitment to caring for patients, Pope Francis described their work as a testimony of solidarity and proximity. In a world often marked by individualism, he underscored the importance of their presence and support for those in need.
“Yours is a testimony of solidarity and proximity, even more important in this world marked by individualism.”
He highlighted the value of friendship, closeness, and listening in offering support to the sick and emphasized the need to place them at the center of care. Their stories and relationships can provide meaning in the face of pain and offer hope even in the most challenging circumstances.
Embracing a Spirit of Giving
Reflecting on the word “illuminate”, Pope Francis spoke about the importance of giving and the antidote it provides to consumerism. He encouraged a focus on Christ child during the Christmas season, drawing strength from His example of fragility, comfort, and tenderness.
“Let us draw strength from His fragility, comfort from His cry, courage from His tenderness.”
Building Hope through Grassroots Presence
The Pope commended the Association for their grassroots presence and commitment to being a tangible and supportive presence in the community. He praised their efforts to provide hope for a cure and access to the latest therapies, ensuring that individuals feel accompanied and supported throughout their treatment.
“You are a building block in the construction of two hopes: the hope for a cure, always, and the hope of therapy, in its most up-to-date methods.”
Overall, Pope Francis’s meeting with the Italian Association against Leukaemia, Lymphoma, and Myeloma highlighted the importance of dispelling darkness with the light of compassion, solidarity, and support for those facing illness.
