Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco is embarking on an inspiring project to deepen devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe in response to Pope Francis’ call to prepare and pray as we approach the 500th anniversary of the Guadalupe apparition.
Cordileone shared with EWTN’s Raymond Arroyo on “The World Over with Raymond Arroyo” his mission to spread awareness of Pope Francis’ call, which he believes is not widely known among English-speaking Catholics.
With this objective in mind, the archbishop is championing Project Guadalupe 2031, an initiative designed to assist families in enthroning Our Lady of Guadalupe in their homes.
Welcome to our blog! Today, we are excited to share with you the upcoming “Mass of the Americas” that will be celebrated across the country, aiming to foster a deeper devotion to Our Lady.
Archbishop Cordileone has also brought attention to a nine-year intercontinental novena, following Pope Francis’ call in 2022, leading up to the fifth centennial of the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe in 2031.
“We want to promote awareness of this and invite people into this novena to instill greater devotion to Our Lady because she’s the one who always leads us to the encounter with her son,” Cordileone expressed.
Commissioned six years ago, the Mass of the Americas incorporates popular Mexican music traditions into the sacred music of the Church, composed by Frank La Rocca. This liturgy of unity honors Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Guadalupe, patronesses of the United States and Mexico, respectively.
Archbishop Cordileone reflected on the inception of this idea during an archdiocesan celebration, emphasizing the importance of Our Lady in uniting people across borders, languages, and cultures.
“It’s a Mass of unity,” Cordileone highlighted, revealing that the special Mass will be celebrated in various locations throughout the U.S., culminating in a celebration on the memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary on Oct. [date].
