Exploring the Future of Christians in Syria
Following the recent regime change in Syria, leaders of the Christian Churches in Aleppo engaged in constructive discussions with the new governing bodies on December 9. Chaldean Bishop Antoine Audo described the meeting as “very positive,” emphasizing assurances of security and the continuity of religious practices for Syrian Christians. The authorities also affirmed the preservation of Christian schools. Despite progress, challenges persist, prompting Christians to remain vigilant amidst the evolving landscape.
Celebrating the Feast of Mar Behnam and Sarah in Iraq
On December 10, the Feast of Mar Behnam and Sarah was joyously celebrated at their monastery in Khidr Ilyas, near Qaraqosh, Iraq. The day commenced with the unveiling of a newly restored building, graced by Archbishop Hano and clergy. A solemn Mass, led by Archbishop Hano and Mar Abris, honored the martyred siblings Mar Behnam and Sarah, revered for their steadfast faith in the 4th century. Their monastery stands as a testament to their sacrifice.
Introducing the New Cardinal of Syro-Malabar Church
Exciting news for the Syro-Malabar Church as Cardinal George Jacob Koovakad, the coordinator of Pope’s Apostolic Journeys, was elevated to cardinal status by Pope Francis on December 7. Hailing from Chethipuzha, Kerala, India, Cardinal Koovakad was ordained a priest in 2004. His cardinal appointment at St. Peter’s Basilica, alongside 20 others, marked a significant milestone for the church.
