The European Bishops’ Call for Unity and Protection of Minorities in Syria
The Bishops of the European Union are sending a powerful message to Syria’s new government leaders: reject sectarianism and extremism, and protect the rights of minorities. As the country enters a crucial phase in its history, European Bishops are calling for an orderly and peaceful transition of power.
In a statement released by the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE), the Bishops emphasize the importance of embracing the contributions and unique identities of the many ethnic and religious minorities in Syria. They urge the new authorities to safeguard religious temples and sites belonging to minorities, provide access to humanitarian aid, and ensure the safe return of internally displaced persons to their homes.
A Message of Solidarity
Prior to the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, Bishop Mariano Crociata, the President of COMECE, expressed his solidarity with the Maronite Archbishop of Aleppo and other bishops of the Christian Churches in Aleppo. In a heartfelt letter, Bishop Crociata reassured the Syrian bishops of COMECE’s commitment to advocating for the needs of the Syrian people and working towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
As the world watches the developments in Syria, the European Bishops stand as a beacon of hope, calling for unity, respect for minorities, and a peaceful future for all Syrians.
