When Pope Francis speaks, the world listens. Recently, he highlighted the incredible work of “Manos Unidas” in combating hunger, underdevelopment, and lack of education in developing countries. What makes this organization stand out? According to the Holy Father, it’s the “feminine genius” that inspires and drives their mission.

As Manos Unidas celebrates its 65th anniversary, Pope Francis praised the organization for its commitment to promoting progress in developing countries. He emphasized the “sensitivity and fortitude proper to the feminine genius” that is evident in their work.
Manos Unidas, also known as the “Catholic Committee for the Campaign against World Hunger,” was founded in response to a call from the FAO in 1959. Since then, it has been dedicated to feeding the “hunger for bread, culture, and God” that plagues a large part of humanity.
Mary, the Model for Humanity
Reflecting on the feminine genius that drives Manos Unidas, Pope Francis turned to the Blessed Virgin Mary as the ultimate example. He described Mary as the “fully realized model of our humanity” and highlighted her role in contributing to the betterment of the world.
The Pope acknowledged the unique perspective that women bring to the organization, emphasizing their intuition and compassion in carrying out the mission of fighting hunger, underdevelopment, and lack of education.
A Christian Vision
For Pope Francis, the work of Manos Unidas is rooted in a Christian vision of the human person, based on the Gospel and the Social Doctrine of the Church. He commended the members for their dedication and encouraged them to continue their mission of voluntary service and assistance.
As the Jubilee year approaches, Pope Francis invited the members of Manos Unidas to be “pilgrims of hope” and contribute to the material, moral, and spiritual development of the most vulnerable in society.
Building a Civilization of Love
As Advent begins, Pope Francis extended his best wishes to all, hoping that this season of anticipation would lead to a spiritual renewal and contribute to the building of a “civilization of love.” With the support of organizations like Manos Unidas, this vision of a more compassionate and just world is within reach.
