Recently, on September 14, the tragic murder of Juan Antonio López, a city council member and environmental activist in Honduras, sent shockwaves through the community. His work with the Mesoamerican Ecclesial Network was internationally recognized, highlighting the dangers faced by leaders and defenders of human rights in Latin America.
In defence of defenders
In response to this alarming incident, the Latin American Bishops’ Conference, in collaboration with the Platform for Peace, Democracy, and Human Rights and the Latin American Protection Community, is launching the “Life is hanging on by a thread” campaign.
With the powerful slogan, “Weaving the future, protecting life,” the campaign aims to advocate for the protection, solidarity, and acknowledgment of the tireless work of human rights defenders and civic leaders.
The official launch of the campaign is set for December 10, where representatives from across Latin America will gather virtually to honor López and others who have sacrificed their lives for their causes.
A campaign to save lives
The “Life is hanging on by a thread” campaign seeks to spotlight emblematic cases of human rights and environmental defenders in Latin America and the Caribbean, bringing to light the stories of those fighting for justice.
This campaign is crucial as incidents like the murder of Juan Antonio López are not isolated but part of a larger systemic issue in Latin America. Global Witness reports that 85% of environmental defenders killed in 2023 were from Latin America, with Honduras alone witnessing the murder of 18 environmentalists last year.
As the campaign progresses, various testimonies of individuals defending human rights and indigenous communities will be shared, emphasizing the urgent need for protection and recognition of these brave individuals.
The campaign will culminate on December 10, 2025, coinciding with the Jubilee of Hope, symbolizing a beacon of light in the fight for human rights and environmental justice.
