The Stunning Restoration of Rome’s Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo
Step back in time and marvel at the beauty of Rome’s Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo, a true gem of the Roman Renaissance and Baroque periods. After undergoing extensive restoration works that began in 2022, this historic landmark has now reopened its doors to the public.
Originally built in the late 15th century on the site of an earlier church, Santa Maria del Popolo is home to breathtaking works by renowned masters such as Bernini, Bramante, Caravaggio, Pinturicchio, and Raphael.
The recent restoration project, a successful collaboration between public and private entities, has meticulously restored the church’s magnificent architecture and art to their original splendor.
The two-year project was overseen by Rome’s special Superintendency and the Fondo Edifici di Culto, with financial support from media company Urban Vision and the Mecenati Roman Heritage association.
The restoration project encompassed both the interior and exterior of the basilica, including the central nave, transept, roof, and decorative elements like stuccoes and the marble coat of arms of Pope Sixtus IV.
Notable highlights of the restoration include the exquisite Cerasi Chapel, featuring Caravaggio’s masterpieces, and the Chigi Chapel with works by Raphael and Bernini. The church’s rich history and artistry have been preserved for generations to come.
This meticulous restoration was completed just in time for the Vatican’s Jubilee Year 2025, welcoming over 32 million pilgrims and tourists to the Eternal City.
