Missionaries of Hope: Pope Francis Inspires the San Paolo Theological Institute
The San Paolo Theological Institute of Catania, Sicily, recently received a powerful message from Pope Francis, urging them to be bearers of hope in a region facing numerous social challenges. Addressing a gathering of formators, staff, and students, the Pope emphasized the importance of offering a comprehensive formation that can make a positive impact on both the Church and society.
Founded in 1969, the Institute plays a crucial role in the theological formation of priests, religious, and lay people in eastern Sicily. Pope Francis commended their collaborative efforts with the Theological Faculty of Palermo, highlighting it as a model for other institutions to follow in promoting unity and mission within the Church.
Recognizing the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of Sicily, the Pope underscored the Institute’s connection to local martyrs and emphasized the need for new ways of evangelization in the region. He also praised the increasing number of female students at the Institute, reflecting societal changes and the empowerment of women in Sicilian society.
Despite the challenges of corruption and mafia influence, Pope Francis called for a message of hope and resilience to be spread by the Institute. He urged them to promote a culture of welcome and fraternity, especially towards the marginalized and migrants in Sicilian society.
Encouraging dialogue with the broader cultural context of Sicily, including its literary heritage, the Pope emphasized the importance of inspiring hope and commitment in the face of adversity. He concluded his address by invoking Saint Nicholas as a symbol of Christian unity and urged the Institute to work towards visible unity within the Church.
