Welcome to the Advent Sermon Blog!
Greetings, readers! Today, we delve into the inspiring Advent Sermon delivered by Fr. Roberto Pasolini, the new Preacher of the Papal Household, to Pope Francis and the Roman Curia. The theme of his sermon was “The Door of Wonder.”
As we approach the celebration of the Lord’s birth at Christmas and prepare to cross the Jubilee Door with renewed hope, Fr. Pasolini emphasized the importance of awakening wonder before God’s newness, particularly the mystery of the Incarnation.
He highlighted the story of Mary, who embraced God’s plan with natural wonder and free participation, urging us to dissolve the rigidity of our hearts that closes us off to new possibilities. By saying ‘no’ to fear, resignation, and cynicism, we can open ourselves to see the seeds of the Gospel already present in reality and bring God’s hope into the world.
Fr. Roberto Pasolini, a Capuchin Franciscan friar, succeeded Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa as the Preacher of the Papal Household after 44 years of service. In his first Advent Sermon, he focused on the prophetic voices that challenge us to notice God’s presence and action within history, leading us to awaken wonder before what God desires to accomplish in our lives and in the world.
The theme of the three Advent Sermons chosen by Fr. Pasolini is “The Doors of Hope: Toward the Opening of the Holy Year through the Prophecy of Christmas.”
Opening the Door of Wonder
In his meditation, Fr. Pasolini invited everyone to open “The Door of Wonder,” emphasizing the courage of dissent shown by Elizabeth and the humility to adhere exemplified by Mary. He encouraged us to interrupt the flow of events and open ourselves to God’s newness, especially in a time marked by suffering and uncertainty.
Reflecting on Elizabeth and Mary, Fr. Pasolini drew parallels between Elizabeth’s courageous ‘no’ to the apparent continuity of things and Mary’s joyful ‘yes’ to God’s newness. He explored how Mary’s response to the angel Gabriel’s announcement of the Incarnation exemplified complete freedom and trust in God’s plan.
Fr. Pasolini highlighted the importance of embracing God’s call, even when it exposes us to death and requires us to say ‘yes’ at the cost of our entire life. Through Mary’s holy wonder and enthusiastic acceptance of God’s will, we are reminded to participate in His plan freely and consciously.
As we journey through Advent, may we learn from the example of Mary and Elizabeth, opening ourselves to God’s newness with wonder and faith. Stay tuned for more reflections on the Advent Sermons as we prepare to cross the Jubilee Door with renewed hope!
