Exciting news from the Fabbrica di San Pietro! The stained-glass window in the Chapel housing Michelangelo’s Pieta has been replaced as part of their work for the Jubilee. The original window, installed in 1973 to protect the masterpiece from damage, has been replaced with a high-tech protection system consisting of nine pieces of shatterproof and bulletproof glass designed by Italian experts. The new window allows visitors to once again admire the iconic sculpture in all its splendor.
Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, archpriest of the Basilica, expressed the significance of this restoration in today’s global context, emphasizing the symbolism of the Virgin offering humanity the Son of God for reconciliation and peace.
The Intervention
The replacement of the stained-glass window, after fifty years, was necessary for both aesthetic and structural reasons. The new glass is more transparent and mechanically efficient, providing enhanced visibility and safety. The project was executed with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring the protection of the artwork for years to come.
Support
The project was made possible through generous donations from Piedmontese businessmen and professionals. Their support enabled the successful completion of this important restoration work.
New Light
In addition to the window replacement, the chapel and the Pietà have been equipped with a modern lighting system, enhancing the viewing experience for visitors. The lighting design, donated by iGuzzini, complements the beauty of the sculpture and the chapel.
Other Interventions
During the restoration process, additional works were carried out on the frescoes surfaces of the Chapel of the Pietà, enriching the overall aesthetic of the space. The grooved stained-glass window in the chapel was also secured for preservation.
The Chapel of Mercy
The Chapel of Mercy, adorned with frescoes by Giovanni Lanfranco, is a testament to the exaltation of the Cross and its significance in Christian faith. The decorative cycle in the chapel depicts various episodes of the Passion of Christ, creating a spiritually enriching experience for visitors.
