The Vatican has received a special gift in anticipation of the Jubilee of 2025 – a one-of-a-kind, green, electric G-Glass popemobile tailored specifically to Pope Francis’ needs.

The CEO of Mercedes-Benz, Ola Källenius, and his team presented Pope Francis with the new convertible popemobile on December 4. Describing it as “a great honor,” Källenius emphasized the attention to detail given to meet all of the Holy Father’s requirements.
Designed specifically for the Pope on the occasion of the Jubilee Year, this popemobile will make its debut in St. Peter’s Square at the next papal event. The entire team involved in creating the vehicle was present for the delivery, meeting Pope Francis’ request.
A Century of Collaboration
Mercedes-Benz has a long history of working with the Vatican to provide popemobiles. The first was gifted to Pope Pius XI in 1930. Pope Francis’ current popemobile is a gasoline-powered G-Class used for his weekly General Audiences.
A Sustainable Choice for the Pope
Mercedes-Benz collaborated with Vatican representatives for nearly a year to create a car tailored to Pope Francis’ needs. Emphasizing zero emissions, the Vatican aims to transition all its vehicles to emission-free by 2030, aligning with Mercedes’ goals.
“We are moving towards zero emissions and are launching many electric products,” explained the CEO. The new popemobile, uniquely crafted for Pope Francis, features a rotating seat, handcrafted interior, and all-wheel drive optimized for the slow speeds often required in public appearances.
A Blend of Tradition and Innovation
In addition to modern features, the 2025 popemobile retains traditional elements. Painted white with the license plate SCV 1 (State of Vatican City), the car includes a retractable roof and a unique door design for the Pope’s comfort and safety during travels.
This one-of-a-kind electric popemobile truly embodies the spirit of sustainability and innovation, fitting for the green Pope of the Vatican.
