Today, we are excited to share with you the heartwarming encounter between Pope Francis and the Sisters of the Sacred Family of Nazareth. During the meeting, Pope Francis encouraged the sisters to be “thresholds” through which displaced or fleeing communities can find “refuge” and “peace”. The Pope graciously received a spiritual bouquet from the General Superior, symbolizing the deep connection and dedication of the congregation.

Patient Waiting and Hopeful Expectation
As the anniversary falls at the beginning of Advent, Pope Francis highlighted the importance of patient waiting and hopeful expectation, mirroring the anticipation of the Advent season. He emphasized the need for collaboration among the different missions of the congregation, all united in contemplation of Jesus, especially in the Blessed Sacrament and in serving others.
Communities as “Thresholds” for Families
Reflecting on the Jubilee anniversary, Pope Francis underscored the significance of this time for individuals and communities to take stock of their lives and listen to what the Holy Spirit is saying. He called for authentic and personal encounters with Jesus, the “door” to our salvation, and urged the Sisters to be welcoming thresholds for families seeking refuge, hope, and peace in Christ the Savior.
Grace Leading to Joy
Pope Francis expressed his solidarity with the many families displaced or fleeing their homes, urging the Sisters to work for those experiencing various hardships. He concluded by bestowing the Lord’s blessing upon them, wishing that His grace would be their joy.
The Spiritual Bouquet Presented to Pope Francis
At the conclusion of the meeting, Sister Angela Marie Mazzeo, the General Superior, presented Pope Francis with a “spiritual bouquet” consisting of 2,901 Holy Masses, over 6,000 Rosaries, 566 hours of adoration, 2,764 Divine Mercy Chaplets, and various acts of love and charity such as fasting, pilgrimages, and daily prayers.
The Relics of the Martyrs of Novgorodek in Rome
On December 3rd, the relics of the blessed martyrs of Novgorodek, sisters belonging to the Sacred Family of Nazareth, were transported to the Basilica of San Bartolomeo on the Tiber Island. These sisters, including Blessed Sister Stella and her ten companions, sacrificed their lives to save others during the German occupation in 1943. Their selfless act of martyrdom has left a lasting legacy of faith and love.
Faithful to God Amidst Hate and Violence
During the ceremony, Monsignor Ambrogio Spreafico emphasized the spiritual strength of the sisters who remained faithful to God in the face of hatred and violence. The General Superior, Sister Angela Marie Mazzeo, recalled their hope in eternal life and devotion to others, which inspired an extraordinary story of love and sacrifice.
