Empowering Thai Students to Foster Interreligious Harmony
More than 200 students from over 40 schools in Thailand gathered at the Sarasas Suvarnabhumi Institute of Technology in Bangkok for a unique event aimed at promoting interreligious harmony. The “Extra Peace: Project Presentation Competition” on November 30 brought together 10 finalists who showcased creative solutions to address pressing issues related to religious understanding and coexistence.
The competition was inspired by the success of the “Extra Peace” student team from Sarasas Ektra School, which received funding during the MISSION POSSIBLE: Youth Social Hackathon in July. The team utilized the funding to implement a project focused on promoting dialogue among different religious groups, serving as a model for the competition.
From immersive educational games to films, rap music, and augmented reality maps, the finalists presented diverse strategies to tackle challenges such as religious discrimination and foster interfaith understanding among youth.
Chulabhat Tantichaiboriboon, leader of the Extra Peace team, emphasized the importance of values such as love, compassion, and respect in creating a diverse and inclusive environment. Despite the differences in religious backgrounds among students, the event highlighted the potential for learning, connection, and growth together.
While the school environment promotes diversity and inclusivity, Chulabhat acknowledged the ongoing religious conflicts outside its walls that continue to divide communities. He emphasized the need for open dialogue and mutual understanding to overcome these challenges.
The competition showcased the pivotal role of youth in shaping a harmonious future. Pisut Yongkamol, Director of Sarasas Ektra School, encouraged participants to embrace authenticity as they address social issues, planting seeds of peace and hope that will continue to grow beyond the event.
The event also emphasized the power of dialogue and collaboration in addressing sensitive issues. Peter Monthienvichienchai, Executive Director of LiCAS News, commended the students for their courage in tackling difficult topics and highlighted the importance of truly listening to each other.
