Pope Francis has penned a heartfelt letter to Catholics in Nicaragua, expressing his solidarity, affection, and continuous prayers to the Virgin Mary, seeking her comfort amidst the persecution of faith that the country is enduring under the leadership of President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo.
As the novena leading up to the feast of the Immaculate Conception unfolds, the Holy Father addressed a pastoral letter on Dec. 2 to the “beloved Church in Nicaragua.”
The Pope conveyed his love for the Nicaraguan people, renowned for their profound devotion to God, whom they affectionately refer to as “Papachú.”
“I stand by your side,” reassured the Holy Father, urging the faithful to rely on Divine Providence, the ultimate guide, especially during the most challenging times when discerning God’s will seems inscrutable. In such moments, he emphasized the importance of not questioning God’s care and mercy.
Pope Francis underscored that faith in God and loyalty to the Church serve as guiding lights in their lives. “Have faith and hope; they can work wonders,” he affirmed.
He also encouraged them to turn to the Immaculate Virgin, alluding to the theme of his letter: “Who brings so much joy? The Conception of Mary!” This phrase is synonymous with the celebration of “La Gritería,” a Nicaraguan tradition that fills churches every December.
