As Advent and Christmas approach in the Holy Land once again amidst conflict, the people of Bethlehem find themselves in a familiar yet challenging situation.
This past weekend, the friars of the Custody of the Holy Land, led by Father Francesco Patton, custos of the Holy Land, arrived in Bethlehem to kick off the Advent celebrations, a tradition that brings hope and joy to the town where Jesus was born.
While Bethlehem may not be directly involved in the ongoing conflict, it continues to face challenges such as economic crises, violence from Israeli settlers, and a wave of emigration that affects its residents.
The town, though not as desolate as it was a year ago, still grapples with a sense of fear and uncertainty, overshadowing the festive season with a heavy atmosphere. The hope of the people here is dampened by these struggles, but their resilience shines through amidst adversity.
Pharmacies are witnessing a surge in the demand for anti-anxiety medications, reflecting the prevailing sense of unease and fear among people. Despite the festive season approaching, many are hesitant to celebrate, given the looming threat of war creeping closer.
The Christian churches of the Holy Land have urged their followers to display signs of hope this year, albeit with caution and restraint. Emulating the Christmas story, where the angels brought tidings of joy in dark times, the Patriarchs and Heads of the Churches in Jerusalem released a statement on November 22, encouraging a spirit of hope amidst adversity.
The entrance of the Custos of the Holy Land, Father Francesco Patton, into Bethlehem on November 30, 2024, marked the beginning of Advent with a festive procession. Children lined the streets, welcoming him warmly, as he made his way to the Basilica of the Nativity, tracing the path believed to have been taken by the Holy Family.
Amidst the celebrations, the echoes of war were impossible to ignore. Israel’s conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon loomed large, with children holding signs along Star Street, calling for peace and solidarity. Messages such as “Peaceful solutions are always better” and “Together we can create change” adorned the streets, a poignant reminder of the turbulent times we live in.
