Welcome to the newest initiative by the Archdiocese of Bangalore in India – the “Migrants Reception and Short Stay Centre”! This groundbreaking project aims to provide a safe shelter for migrants in need, marking a significant milestone in the Archdiocese’s mission of service and inclusivity.
Situated in Mathikere, near Yeshwantpur Railway Station, this center is easily accessible to those seeking refuge in Bangalore, the vibrant capital of Karnataka, India. With nearly half of the city’s residents being migrants, the Archdiocese has recognized the importance of addressing the needs of this population by establishing this much-needed shelter.
Foundation Ceremony
On December 1st, Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal, blessed the foundation stone of the center in a ceremony attended by Archbishop Peter Machado, Auxiliary Bishop Arokia Raj Satis Kumar, the parish priest, and parishioners of Christ the King Parish. Their collective efforts have played a crucial role in supporting this initiative.
Archbishop Girelli commended the project, emphasizing the importance of upholding the dignity of migrants. He stated, “Migrants are like God and should be welcomed with dignity, aligning with Pope Francis’ vision of addressing the needs of migrants.”
Graced by representatives from the Apostolic Nunciature, priests, religious leaders, and parishioners, the event showcased a strong sense of community support for this vital cause. Archbishop Machado expressed gratitude to the Vatican’s Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development and the Scalabrinian missionaries who will oversee the operations of the center.
A Testament to Gospel Values
In line with Pope Francis’ message, the establishment of the “Migrants Reception and Short Stay Centre” serves as a tangible expression of the Church’s commitment to Gospel values of love, service, and inclusivity. It stands as a testament to the Church’s enduring mission to care for the marginalized and vulnerable, embodying the call to love and serve others with compassion.
This initiative not only provides physical shelter but also offers a beacon of hope and support to migrants, affirming their dignity and worth as individuals. The Archdiocese of Bangalore continues to exemplify the spirit of hospitality and compassion, echoing the Indian cultural ethos of ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ – where a guest is truly akin to God.
