As the temperatures in Rome start to drop and the anticipation for the upcoming jubilee year builds, Pope Francis has made a heartfelt request to the city’s priests and religious community. He has asked them to open up any vacant facilities on their properties to provide shelter for the homeless and those at risk of homelessness.
With the expected large influx of pilgrims for the 2025 jubilee, the pope highlighted the potential housing issues that could arise and called for a “courageous gesture of love” in a letter published on November 15.
“I urge all diocesan entities that own real estate to contribute towards addressing the housing emergency with acts of charity and solidarity, bringing hope to the many individuals in Rome facing housing insecurity,” he stated.
Pope Francis appealed to all Church organizations, including religious orders, movements, and diocesan churches, to provide any available apartments or guesthouses to those in need of shelter.
Reflecting on the theme of hope for the jubilee year, which he described as stemming from love and feeling loved, the pope emphasized the Church’s social teaching that recognizes everyone’s right to land, a home, and employment.
“In preparation for the upcoming jubilee, I have instructed my diocese to demonstrate a concrete commitment to addressing housing challenges. This means not only welcoming the pilgrims who will be arriving but also implementing measures to protect those without homes or at risk of losing theirs,” Francis explained.
The jubilee, or holy year, is set to officially commence on Dec. 31st. In light of this significant event, Pope Francis’s call to action serves as a reminder of the importance of compassion and solidarity in addressing societal issues and providing support to those in need. Let us all join in this effort to make a positive impact during this special time of renewal and reflection.
