Exciting news for Rome as the redevelopment of the square in front of the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano is set to be completed by the start of the Jubilee in 2025. The project includes the installation of flower beds and fountains with water features.
The redevelopment works for the square of the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano in Rome have begun. Financed with a budget of 15 million euros and set to be completed by the start of the Jubilee in 2025, the project covers an area of around 10,000 square meters and includes the renewal of the pavement, the arrangement of flower beds with automatic irrigation systems, and fountains with water features to combat heat islands.
According to the Department of Development, Infrastructure, and Urban Maintenance overseeing the project, the construction will focus on “maintaining public greenery and environmental sustainability.” The first phase of the works, with the demarcation of the areas dedicated to interventions, started on April 3.
All the works in the square of San Giovanni in Laterano will not affect traffic as they are carried out entirely in a pedestrian area.
The Public Works Councilor Ornella Segnalini explained that after the first phase of the works, which involve site preparation, “work will begin that will be completed for the Holy Year. Another major construction site has started to redesign an urban space and maximize its function as a place of faith and gathering.”
The urban redevelopment and architectural-environmental enhancement of the entire square, as stated on the Capitoline website, “envisage a new configuration of the area in front of the Basilica, currently partly paved and partly green, also to enhance its current purpose as an elective place for major civic and religious events held in the city.”
