The Vatican and Microsoft have collaborated to create a stunning 3D digital model of St. Peter’s Basilica using cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology, offering a unique and immersive way to explore the rich nearly 2,000-year history of the tomb of St. Peter.

Now accessible worldwide at virtual.basilicasanpietro.va, this free interactive platform allows individuals from all corners of the globe to virtually experience the intricate 3D model of St. Peter’s Basilica. The model was created using AI technology that processed over 400,000 high-resolution images captured by drones utilizing advanced photogrammetry techniques.

Microsoft’s Vice Chair and President, Brad Smith, recently unveiled the 3D “digital twin” of the basilica during a press conference at the Vatican, hailing it as one of the most technologically advanced projects of its kind.

“It is literally one of the most technologically advanced and sophisticated projects of its kind that has ever been pursued,” Smith remarked.

This digital platform now allows individuals who may never have the chance to physically visit the Vatican to engage with the beauty, history, and spiritual significance of one of the most iconic churches in the world.
