Welcome to the Future: New High-Tech Bus Shelters Coming to Rome
Rome is stepping into the future with the announcement of new high-tech bus shelters that will soon be installed across the city. These innovative shelters will not only provide shelter from the elements but also offer a range of cutting-edge services to enhance the waiting experience for commuters.
Dubbed ‘Eterna‘, these new bus shelters will feature touchscreen services that display the expected arrival times of buses, provide information on nearby cultural sites, and offer real-time transport news. With USB charging points available, commuters can stay connected and organize their trips efficiently while waiting for their bus.
The project will see the installation of 435 new high-tech bus shelters at various bus stops in Rome, as well as the refurbishment of over 9,600 existing shelters. Mayor Roberto Gualtieri emphasized that dismantled shelters will be repurposed rather than discarded, ensuring sustainability in the project.
The first Eterna shelters are scheduled to be installed in November, with the entire project expected to be completed by the first half of 2025. Gualtieri described this initiative as a significant step towards integrating smart services in Rome, ultimately improving urban mobility and enhancing the city’s appeal to residents and tourists alike.
This development comes at a crucial time as Rome prepares for the Vatican’s Jubilee Year 2025, anticipating a large influx of visitors. With these futuristic bus shelters in place, the Eternal City is gearing up to provide a seamless and modern transportation experience for all.
