The Relationship Between Local and Universal Churches Explored at Synod Forum
As part of the ongoing Synod on synodality, a group of Synod delegates recently gathered at the Pontifical Augustinianum Institute in Rome for a theological-pastoral forum. The focus of the forum was to delve into the mutual relationship between particular Churches and the universal Church.

On the evening of October 16, the second theological-pastoral forum of the Synod on Synodality took place at the Pontifical Patristic Institute Augustinianum in Rome. The theme for the evening was “The mutual relationship between the local Church and the universal Church,” which guided the discussions moderated by Professor Anna Rowlands from the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development.
The forum featured prominent speakers from the Synod assembly, including Professor Antonio Autiero, Professor Myriam Wijlens, Professor Miguel de Salis Amaral, and Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops.
Unity in Diversity
Cardinal Prevost shared personal experiences that highlighted the importance of looking beyond individual dioceses to promote a deeper understanding of belonging to the universal Church. He emphasized the uniqueness and richness that each particular Church brings to the universal Church.
The Church Beyond Borders
Speaking to Vatican News, Cardinal Provost stressed the unity of the body of Christ in the Church, transcending geographical boundaries and emphasizing communion among local communities.
Inclusive Ecclesial Relationships
Fr. Miguel de Salis Amaral highlighted the importance of ecclesial relationships and referenced the Second Vatican Council’s perspective on local Churches as part of the universal ecclesial community. He emphasized the richness that each local Church contributes to the global Church.
Local Churches as Synodal Spaces
Fr. Autiero discussed the synodal and missionary life within local Churches, highlighting the interconnectedness between local and universal communities. He emphasized the role of local bishops as a unifying force within the Church.
Australian Model of Synodality
Professor Wijlens talked about the various forms of diocesan and parish pastoral councils, as well as plenary councils, as vehicles for synodality within the Church. She shared the example of the Australian Church and its recent plenary council, which sought to involve a broad spectrum of the faithful in decision-making processes.
This theological-pastoral forum provided a platform for insightful discussions on the interplay between local and universal Churches, highlighting the diverse contributions that each community brings to the wider Church.
