Cardinal William Goh, Archbishop of Singapore, has delivered a powerful message urging the public to exhibit generosity and compassion towards migrants. He highlights their pivotal role in laying the groundwork for Singapore’s growth and prosperity, emphasizing that the beauty of creation belongs to all, not just a select few.
“Let us share the blessings we receive and shift our focus towards those in need – the last, the lost, and the least,” he passionately expressed.
In a report by CatholicNews SG, the official newspaper of the Archdiocese of Singapore, Cardinal Goh implores the faithful to embody the Gospel values and become the living embodiment of Christ to others.
“If we desire to transform the world, we must first transform ourselves,” he added.
Cardinal Goh conveyed this message during the commemoration of the 110th World Day of Migrants and Refugees at the Church of Saint Mary of the Angels last month. The event brought together over 1,400 migrants, collaborators, guests, and local community members, organized by the Archdiocesan Commission for the Pastoral Care of Migrants & Itinerant People.
The celebration included a solemn Eucharistic service led by Cardinal Goh, accompanied by concelebrants and chaplains from various migrant communities. The readings were delivered in different languages, and the choir performed hymns in Tagalog and Mandarin, symbolizing unity amidst diversity.
Following the Mass, 11 migrant communities showcased a stunning array of performances, from lively songs to traditional dances, each showcasing their unique ways of worshiping the Lord.
During his recent Apostolic Visit to Singapore in September, Pope Francis also emphasized the importance of fair wages and dignity for migrant workers, acknowledging their significant contributions to Singapore’s development.
“I commend the various policies in place to support the vulnerable, and I urge special attention to be given to the poor, the elderly, and migrant workers, ensuring their dignity is upheld,” remarked Pope Francis.
