Welcome to this week’s edition of Eastern Churches News, brought to you in partnership with L’Ĺ’uvre d’Orient. We have some compelling stories to share, so let’s dive in.
This week, our hearts are with the village of Rmeich in southern Lebanon, facing a dire humanitarian crisis amid the ongoing clashes between Israel and Hezbollah. The situation is dire, with civilians seeking refuge in shelters and supplies of food, medicine, and fuel rapidly depleting. The cries for international aid grow louder as the community prays fervently for peace.
A Call for Peace through Prayer
Turning our attention to the global stage, October 7 marked the World Day of Prayer and Fasting for Peace, declared by Pope Francis in response to escalating violence in the Middle East. The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem called for a unified spiritual effort to bring an end to the turmoil that plagues the region.
Celebrating a Decade of Unity
Meanwhile, on October 3, the dioceses of Mosul and Lyon commemorated the 10th anniversary of their partnership. A special concert in Lyon featured the Kennara orchestra from Qaraqosh, performing traditional Iraqi sacred music to captivated audiences. The event also showcased a stunning exhibition of Iraqi attire, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the region.
The Kennara orchestra, founded with the noble purpose of restoring hope to the Christian community in Qaraqosh after the harrowing experiences under the Islamic State’s regime, continues to inspire resilience and unity through the power of music.
As we journey through these stories of struggle, faith, and collaboration, let us remember that even in the darkest times, the light of hope and solidarity shines bright. Stay tuned for more updates from the Eastern Churches next week.
